FMU Athletic Director Announces Cancellation of Women’s Soccer, Volleyball

By A.D. Drew, BCSN

October 13, 2020 –Earlier today, Florida Memorial University Athletic Director, Ernest T. Jones, issued a statement that the University has cancelled their women’s soccer and volleyball programs for the remainder of the 2020 season. This immediate cancellation came  as a result of feedback from a university survey and conversation with members of both teams and University.

The press release stated that the well-being of our student-athletes, coaches, and athletics staff is the priority. Currently enrolled student-athletes will retain their scholarships through the completion of the academic year if they choose to remain at FMU.

“Based on results from a survey administered to student-athletes and coaches, we feel it is in the best interest of the University to cancel the remainder of the women’s volleyball and soccer season,” Director of Athletics Ernest T. Jones said. “This action allows student-athletes to continue to focus on their academics.”

The University has posted updates to its COVID-19 policy on the university’s website,  https://www.fmuniv.edu/critical-update-fmu-covid-19/ ,   on October 2 and October 11.  In addition, the athletic department has revised its COVID-19 policy this week.

As of the time of this article, football and men’s soccer will continue with the remainder of their season.  The men’s soccer team is scheduled to take action, with interim head coach, Chris Pinot, on Saturday, October 17, on the road versus Ava Marie University in Miami, FL.  The Lions football team is scheduled to hit the gridiron, also, on Saturday versus Warner University in Lake Wales, FL.  The Women’s Volleyball team will begin training for the University’s second beach volleyball season later this Fall.
