Albany State Posts 12-2 Win In Opening Game Of Tyson Foods Black College World Series

Top-seeded Albany State broke open a close game with eight runs in the seventh for a 12-2 win over fourth-seeded Kentucky State in the first game of the 2022 Tyson Foods Black College World Series Wednesday afternoon. The event is being played at Riverwalk Staidum, which is the home of the Tampa Bay Rays Double-A affiliate. 


The Golden Rams improve to 32-14 on the season while the Thorobreds fall to 22-23 in the double elimination tournament.

Kentucky State broke through with a run in the third inning. With one down, Kelton Saylor singled to right and quickly swiped second. With two down, Antonio Chambers ripped a pitch through the left side of the infield, allowing Saylor to score for a 1-0 edge. 


The Golden Rams knotted the game in the bottom of the fourth. Malik Bell was hit by a pitch with one down. He moved to second on a groundout before racing home on a base hit by Tucker Jordan.

ASU took the lead with three runs in the next frame. Zane Ross and Lachlan Ross each singled to lead off the inning to put runners on the corners. Nicholas Hernandez walked, but Zane Ross scored on a wild pitch. With Lachlan Ross and Hernandez in scoring position, a throwing error allowed Lachlan Ross to score. A sacrifice fly by M. Bell plated Hernandez for a 4-1 margin.

KSU scored a run in the sixth when Chambers singled and later scored on an error. However, the designated home team ended the game with eight runs in the seventh.


Jordan singled in Lachlan Ross and Hernandez. TJ Thomas II followed it up with a single to left, scoring H. Corley, who reached earlier on an error. After a pitching change, Lavoisier Fisher belted a base hit to right field, driving in Jordan and Thomas.

Another error allowed Zane Ross to reach and after Lachlan Ross was hit by a pitch, a walk to Hernandez pushed across Fisher. Nathan Lloyd’s single u the middle rounded out the scoring as Zane Ross and Lachlan Ross both crossed home plate. 


For the game, Tyler Bullock tossed a complete game. He struck out three, walked two and gave up two runs, but only one was earned.


Brady Bibbs took the loss. He worked 6.2 innings and registered five strikeouts. 


At the plate for KSU, Chambers and Saylor had two hits apiece. Chambers drove in one and scored once. Saylor also crossed home plate.


ASU was guided by three hits from Thomas. Jordan had two hits and drove in three. Fisher and Zane

Ross also had two hits. Fisher drove in two. Lachlan Ross scored three times while Hernandez and Zane Ross each trotted across home plate once. 


Albany State will face the winner of Miles and Bluefield State in the BCWS NCAA Division II winners bracket Thursday at 9 a.m., while Kentucky State will play the loser of that contest Thursday at 8 p.m.
