BCSN Football Power Ratings, Week 5

October 4, 2021 | Atlanta, GA

The Black College Sports Network (BCSN) has released its second power rating for the 2021 HBCU football season.  The BCSN power ratings is a computer formula based on wins, losses, conference wins, road wins, and strength of schedule.  The ratings are separated into two classifications:  Division I (MEAC, SWAC, Hampton, North Carolina A&T State, Tennessee State) and Under DI (HBCUs in NCAA Division II, NAIA, and USCAA).

In the Division I classification, with consensus #1, Alabama A&M losing this weekend to Grambling State, the Power Ratings feature a new #1 team, Prairie View A&M.  The Panthers four wins, along with a strength of schedule greater than Jackson State gave them the edge this week.  The JSU Tigers remain at #2, ahead of Alabama A&M, who suffered their first loss since 2019.  Norfolk State's overtime victory over the Hampton Pirates lands the Spartans at the #4.   An idle Alcorn State sits in the #5 slot as they prepare for homecoming this upcoming week.  North Carolina A&T State, Southern, Alabama State, and Florida A&M are in the hunt of cracking the BCSN Top 5.

In the Under Division I classification, the Langston Lions, who own HBCU football's longest current winning streak, sit comfortably atop the BCSN Power Rankings.  The Lions will be off this week, as they prepare for homecoming on October 16.  The Lane College Dragons are the #2 team with their three road victories on the season.  Albany State, who soundly defeated SIAC West favorite Miles, are in the #3 slot.  The Rams, who according to the BCSN Under Division I strength of schedule calculations, are the only team in the top 10 of the strength of schedule category, for game played thus far this season, with a winning record at 4-1.  Savannah State, with a narrow victory over Kentucky State, lead the SIAC conference in wins, with their 3 conference victories.  Bowie State, who ranks in the bottom 10 of the BCSN Under Division I strength of schedule calculations, are #5 in the rankings.
