HBCUs in NAIA Continue Tournament Play

HBCUs that compete in the NAIA continued conference tournament play on yesterday.  Most of the action occurred in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference last night.  The lone game that did not involve the GCAC occurred in the American Midwest Conference, where Harris-Stowe Women saw their season come to an end.  Last nights results and today's games are listed below:

American Midwest Conference (W): #4 Missouri Baptist 84     #5 Harris-Stowe 42
via hornetsathletics.com:  The Hornets, who earned the fifth seed in the tournament, were defeated by a final score of 84-42 to fall to 5-10 on the season. 

Prior to the start of the game, the American Midwest Conference announced the academic all-conference recipients for the 2020-21 season. In order to earn academic all-conference recognition, an athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. For their efforts in the classroom, Kambri Davison, Kya Gordon, Ronne'zja Elliot, Tarsheia Page, and Surina Finnie were all recognized.

Harris-Stowe came out in the first half of the game and had a tough time getting anything going as the Spartans jumped out to an early 11-2 lead. The Hornets continued to struggle as the quarter progressed and the Spartans took a 17-7 lead into the second. Missouri Baptist carried over their momentum into the second and were able to score the first seven points of the quarter to extend their lead to 24-7. Harris-Stowe did their best to get back into the game before the half but found themselves trailing 37-17 at the break.

The Spartans continued to push the tempo to start the second half and were able to grow their lead to 25 in the first three minutes of the period. The Hornets could not find the bottom of the basket as the quarter progressed and found themselves trailing 62-29 heading into the final frame. Harris-Stowe's struggles continued into the fourth and the Spartans were able to close them out down the stretch to solidify the win.

The Hornets went just 13-for-64 (20.31%) from the floor and 3-for-20 (15.00%) from behind the arc. The were outrebounded 52-36 and turned the ball over 20 times while forcing the Spartans to turn the ball over 18 times.

Surina Finnie led the way for the Hornets as she finished with 10 points and a team high six rebounds. In addition to Finnie, Kya Gordon finished with a team high 11 points, Maia Marshall finished with seven points, and Taia Smith finished with seven points to round out the top performers for the Hornets.

This marks the end of the 2020-21 Harris-Stowe women's basketball season. The Hornets finished with the season with a 5-10 overall record and a 5-6 mark in the American Midwest Conference. The team will return to the court in the fall.

via dillardbluedevils.com:   Despite 12 points from senior Destiny Collins (SR/New Orleans, La.), the No. 7 seed Dillard women's basketball team (2-8, 1-5 GCAC*) lost to No. 2 seed Talladega (16-2, 5-1) on Wednesday, Feb. 24, in the Quarterfinals of the GCAC Women's Basketball Tournament by a 100-50 margin at the Billy C. Hawkins Student Center on the campus of Talladega.

Collins did most of her scoring from the free throw line where she went 6-for-6. She also had a steal and an assist. Joining her in double figures was freshman Ajayah Simpson (FR/Lafayette, La.), who had 11 points. Simpson also had five rebounds and two blocks. Senior JaQuanna Hunter (SR/Vacherie, La.) picked up eight points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Taylor Dewitt (SO/Mansfield, La.) totaled six points and four rebounds. Senior Sharan Turner (SR/Gonzales, La.) recorded four points. Freshman Sydni John-Baptiste had four points.

For the Lady Tornadoes, Kameron Shelley had 18 points and two steals. Tyeisha Juhan picked up 15 points, six rebounds and two steals. Jordan Dubose had 10 points and 4 steals. Ireon Smith totaled seven points and eight rebounds. Monet Brown tallied 13 points, six rebounds and three steals. Kendall Weary had 11 points and two steals. Kenetria Redfern led the team with eight rebounds

Dillard shot 11-for-53 (20.8 percent) from the field, 0-for-10 from the three-point range plus 28-for-44 from the charity stripe (63.6 percent). The Lady Bleu Devils totaled 39 rebounds, three assists, eight steals and two block. The program also forced 23 turnovers although they also turned the ball over 37 times themselves.

The Lady Tornadoes shot 37-for-74 (50 percent) from the field, 8-for-19 (42.1 percent) from three-point range plus 18-for-30 (60 percent) from the free-throw line. TC had 54 rebounds, 15 assists, four blocks and 15 steals.

Dillard fell behind 23-7 after the first quarter and were never able to climb their way back into the game. The program found itself down 44-19 at halftime and then were outscored 56-31 over the last two quarters.

via ewctigerpride.com:  With revenge on their minds and the added motivation of advancing to the semifinal round on their own home floor, the #5 seed Edward Waters Men's Basketball squad began Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championships play at #4 seed Rust on Wednesday evening at Kinzell Lawson Gymnasium. The Purple & Orange were able to avenge an earlier regular season loss to the Bearcats with a 76-56 win to earn a spot in the semifinals for the second time in three seasons.

After a quick back and forth between the two teams to start the contest, Edward Waters was able to dart out to a 10-7 lead at the 15:05 mark of the first half. Rust quickly responded with a 9-0 run of their own to retake the lead at 16-10 with 12:47 remaining in the first half. EWC got off of the mat themselves and roared back with a 10-0 run to take back the advantage at 20-16 and would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the contest. Edward Waters ultimately took a nine point lead into the locker room at 39-30 at halftime.

The second half saw the Tigers keep some distance from the Bearcats, but Rust showed their resilience and clawed to with three point of the lead at the 13:10 mark of the half at 45-42. EWC went to work from their and their advantage ultimately grew to double digits for the first time in the contest after a Dontrell Whitaker slam dunk, giving the Tigers a 52-42 lead with 9:10 remaining in the half. EWC saw their lead grow to as much as a game high 23 points and did more than enough to earn a quarterfinal round victory and advance in the single-elimination tournament.

It was Tiger dominance up and down the stat sheet as EWC outshot Rust 46% to 39%, got it done from the bonus sphere 35% to 13%, and forced 13 Bearcat turnovers that resulted in 14 points.

Edward Waters had three players in double figures on the night. DeAndre Barton led the Tigers with 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting, floor general Robert Thomas, III had 12 points, and former Rust star Jordan Jackson had 11 points for EWC.

Rust was led by Devin Sheehy with 12 points, followed by Nathan Stewart, Jordan Watkins, and DeAvion Washington each with 10.

EWC will face #1 seed Talladega in the semifinal round of the tournament on Saturday afternoon.
