Langston's Alexander Signs With WNBA Minnesota Linx

The Minnesota Linx of the WNBA announced last night that they have signed former Langston Lady Lion, Asheika Alexander, to their training camp roster.  Alexander is a 5'10" forward from Gwinnett, Ga. (South Gwinnett High School).  Per Linx policy, detail of her deal were not released.


Alexander led Langston to the championship game in the Sooner Athletic Conference basketball tournament this past season, after her team finished 7th during the regular season (8-8, 4-6 SAC).  During the SAC tournament, Alexander averaged 29.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks.  For the season, she averaged:  22.2 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 1.9 APG, 2.3 SPG, 1.0 BPG, 45.5 FG%, 38.5 3PT%, 65.4 FT%. 

With Langston's second place finish in the SAC, they received an automatic bid to the NAIA tournament, where they were defeated by Loyola (New Orleans).  Alexander received 2nd team All-SAC honors this season.  She was a three-time winner of the Black College Sports Network Small Schools Women's Basketball Player of the Week honor this season.  Alexander led the Sooner Athletic Conference in scoring, while ranking fifth in all of the NAIA in scoring.  Alexander competed two seasons for Langston.  In her 42 total games, she averaged: 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 2.2 steals per game.

Alexander was a 1st team All-American for the BCSN in the Women's NAIA division this season, and finished runner-up in the player of the year voting for the network.  Per Elias Sports, the Gwinnett, GA native becomes the first player signed by the Lynx who has attended an HBCU. 


There have previously been five players from an HBCU drafted into the WNBA (Denique Graves, Howard - 1997 2nd round, Karen Wilkins, Howard – 1998 4th round, Andrea Gardner, Howard - 2002 2nd round, Amba Kongolo, North Carolina Central – 2002 4th round, Jaclyn Winfield, Southern – 2002 4th round).
