Miles Claims 8-3 Win Over Bluefield State

MAY11, 2022 | MONTGOMERY, AL

In the second game of the Division II bracket at the 2022 Tyson Foods Black College World Series, No. 2 Miles posted an 8-3 victory over No. 3 Bluefield State.

The Golden Bears improve to 26-23 on the season while BSC falls to 22-26.

Miles scored in six of the eight frames. The team took control of the game in the bottom of the first stanza and never looked back.

The Big Blue jumped on the board with a run in the top of the first. With one down, Garret Hladilek doubled down the left field line and moved to third on a single by Cole Cote. A wild pitch allowed Hladilek to cross home plate for a 1-0 edge.

The lead would be short lived for the defending champion as the Golden Bears responded with three runs in their first time at the plate. Eli Snelson got things going with a lead-off single. A walk to Kody Long and a hit batter loaded the bags. Jacob Bisharat doubled home a pair of teammates before a sacrifice fly from Michael Archie made it 3-1.

Miles tacked on a run in the second stanza. With two down, James Bitner singled home Peyton Caron, who reached earlier on a single and moved to third on a pair of wild pitches.

BSC trimmed the deficit to one with a run in the third when Hladilek singled in Jordan Varela-Payne, who reached on an error moments before.

Miles pushed the advantage back to three in the fourth. Bitner doubled to the gap in left center with one down. After moving to third on a fielder’s choice, he scored on a passed ball to make it 5-2 in favor of the designated home team. A home run in the fifth from Clifton Orr pushed the score to 6-2, but the visitors countered in the sixth. Brayden Merrick doubled down the left field line and scored on Brantley Durham’s double, closing the gap to three, 6-3. However, it was as close as BSC would get.

The Golden Bears plated a run in the sixth and seventh, extending the lead to five at 8-3. Bisharat scored on a passed ball in the sixth while Caron’s single knocked in William Johnson in the seventh. Johnson opened the frame with a two-bag hit to left field.

At the plate, Bitner, Caron, Johnson and Snelson had two hits apiece. Bisharat drove in two while Bitner crossed home twice.

In the loss, Hladilek led the Big Blue with two hits. He and Durham each knocked in a run.

K. Easterwood worked 5.1 innings en route to earning the win. He struck out one and allowed three runs on six hits. Will Cantey came in and tossed the final 3.2 innings and had five strikeouts for the extended save.

Jordan Livingston took the loss. He worked one inning and gave up four runs. Austin Stambaugh came in and worked seven frames, registering nine strikeouts.
