Tigers Take Down Lions In NAIA Thriller

Edward Waters outlasted Florida Memorial 9-8 in the NAIA Championship at the 2022 Tyson Foods Black College World Series at 1:30 a.m. in the morning. 

The win sends the Tigers (27-27) to the Black College World Series Championship against Kentucky State Saturday at 5 p.m. 

The Tigers jumped on top with a run in the first and three in the fourth for a 4-0 edge. In the first, Keilin Washington singled, swiped second and moved to third on a groundout. He then came home on a base knock from Daquarius Thompkins. 
 
In the second stanza, Anthony Roman walked but he was lifted for a pinch runner. Caden Hutchinson stole second. Isaiah Montes singled to left field. Two batters later, John Nobles blasted a three-run round-tripper over the left field wall for a 4-0 margin. 
 
The Lions struck for three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Yunior Sanchez reached on a fielder’s choice and a walk to Luis Ruiz placed runners on first and second. Both raced home on Fernando Via’s double to left field. After Via moved to third on a wild pitch, he scored on a groundout by Luis Velandia to make it 4-3. 
 
Edward Waters plated four runs in the third. Payton Shubert doubled in Thompkins. Two batters later, Anthony Roman beat out a single to the short stop, allowing Shubert to score. Moments later, Washington singled in Montes and Adrian Laro for an 8-3 score.  
 
A wild pitch pulled Florida Memorial within four in the bottom of the frame. The designated home squad made it an 8-5 game in the sixth stanza. A sacrifice fly from Axel Gomez pushed the Loins within two at 8-6 in the seventh.  

Edward Waters scored what turned out to be the game-winning run in the ninth. Garcia singled, swiped second and moved to third on a wild pitch. After a pitching change, he scored on a wild pitch for the three-run advantage.  


Sanchez doubled home Gomez to make it 9-7. Via’s sacrifice fly pulled the Lions within one. A walk put the tying run on first and the game-winning run at the plate, but Cameron Chastain picked up a three-pitch strikeout to end the game.  


For the game, Washington led the victors with three hits and two RBI. Montes accounted for two hits and scored twice.  

 

Florida Memorial was led by Via’s two hits and three RBI. Ruiz and Sanchez each scored twice.  


On the mound, Will Valenti picked up the win. He had four strikeouts. Chastain garnered the save, registering one strikeout. 

 

Samuel Briceno suffered the loss. He worked 1.1 innings and had two strikeouts. Joseph Figueroa notched eight strikeouts in 5.2 innings of relief. 


The Black College World Series is a postseason event to determine HBCU baseball national champion on the field, while emphasizing the significance of collegiate baseball’s unique regular season where every game counts.  


Black College Championships, along with its selection committee will announce the field of eight-teams in all for the 2022 Black College Baseball Tournament. The field for the world series includes automatic bids via conference championships and at-large entrants and at-large invites. The tournament is a double-elimination two-bracket format.  


Each of the teams in the two-brackets, the winners of those games play each other, while the losers play an elimination game.  


The tournament games pits NCAA DII bracket champion and the NAIA bracket champion as the final two teams left standing advance to a winner take all championship game to determine the national champion.
