Player of the Year Candidates

The Black College Sports Network (BCSN) has named a player of the week for 14 weeks this basketball season.  We originally named players of the week in NAIA, NCAA Division II, and NCAA Division I until the CIAA and SIAC decided to suspend play this season, due to the pandemic.  We then separated our players of the week into Large Schools (NCAA Division I) and Small Schools (remaining NCAA Division II and NAIA).  After internal discussions, the BCSN decided to name a player of the year for all three levels of competition, as originally intended.  

The players of the year will be chosen by a panel of media members who follow HBCU athletics.  Fans will also get a say so in the voting.  Fans may vote via the BCSN Twitter PageThe winner of the fan poll will get an additional vote towards their player of the year vote total.  Listed below are the four candidates for each level:

NAIA

Daryl Baker, Talladega - Team record 25-5 (7-1 GCAC).  1st team All-GCAC.  Team had most wins in HBCU basketball, GCAC regular season champions, led conference in free throw percentage.  Key Statistics: 29 GP, 15.4 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 3.1 APG, 45.4 FG%, 35.9 3PT%, 89.9 FT%.


Rayshawn Mart, Xavier-Louisiana - Team record 14-5 (8-1 GCAC), GCAC tournament champions, GCAC Player of the Year, GCAC tournament MVP, 2x BCSN POW, 3x GCAC POW.  #4 NAIA in steals, #16 NAIA in scoring per game.  Lead GCAC in scoring and steals average, #5 in rebounds per game.  Key Statistics:  19 GP, 21.6 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 2.7 APG, 2.8 SPG, 46.0 FG%, 35.2 3PT%, 69.3 FT%. 


Devin Merriweather, Stillman - Team record 17-4 (14-3 SSC).  SSC West division champion.  1st team All-SSC.  #18 NAIA assists per game.  #2 SSC assists per game.  Key Statistics:  18 GP, 16.2 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 5.2 APG, 1.2 SPG, 50.2 FG%, 30.4 3PT%, 82.4 FT%. 


Trey Petty, Stillman - Team record 17-4 (14-3 SSC).  SSC Player of the Year, 3x SSC POW, 2x BCSN POW.  #4 SSC in scoring, #2 in SSC in steals, #5 SSC in field goal percent.  Key Statistics:  21 GP, 18.0 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 2.2 APG, 1.6 SPG, 50.4 FG%, 45.0 3PT%, 70.6 FT%.


NCAA DIVISION II

Glen Abram, West Virginia State - Team record 9-7 (9-7 MEC).  1st Team All-MEC, 1x BCSN POW, 2nd in MEC in scoring.  Key Statistics:  16 GP, 22.9 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 3.0 APG, 1.3 SPG, 41.2 FG%, 37.3 3PT%, 77.6 FT%.


Gregg Boyd, Tuskegee - Team record 6-7.  Key Statistics:  10 GP, 16.7 PPG, 2.4 RPG, 2.8 APG, 44.1 FG%, 40.0 3PT%, 94.0 FT%.


Anthony Pittman, West Virginia State - Team record 9-7 (9-7 MEC).  1st Team All-MEC, 1x BCSN POW, led MEC in rebounding and block average.  Key Statistics:  14 GP, 17.4 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 1.9 SPG, 1.7 BPG, 58.2 FG%, 78.4 FT%. 


Sai Witt, Lincoln-Missouri - Team record 12-11 (12-10 MIAA).  2nd Team All-MIAA, 1x BCSN POW.  Key Statistics:  20 GP, 15.9 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 1.5 APG, 1.4 SPG, 56.6 FG%, 54.5 FT%.


NCAA DIVISION I

Jawaun Daniels, Prairie View A&M - Team record 16-5 (13-0 SWAC).  SWAC regular season co-champion.  2nd team All-SWAC, 2x SWAC POW, 1x BCSN POW, #2 field goal percent.  Key Statistics:  20 GP, 15.4 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 1.1 APG, 55.8 FG%, 45.5 3PT%, 65.3 FT%.


Tristan Jarrett, Jackson State - Team record 12-6 (11-0 SWAC), SWAC regular season co-champion.  SWAC POW, 1st team All-SWAC, 2x BCSN POW, 2x SWAC POW.  Key Statistics:  18 GP, 21.1 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 1.4 APG, 1.4 SPG, 57.4 FG%, 35.8 3PT%, 84.2 FT%.


Anthony Tarke, Coppin State - Team record 9-13 (8-4 MEAC).  MEAC Player of the Year, MEAC Defensive Player of the Year, 1st team All-MEAC, 3x MEAC POW, 5x MEAC DPOW, Lou Henson Award Finalist, Lefty Drissell Award Finalist, NABC All-District.  Key Statistics:  22 GP, 16.1 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 3.6 APG, 2.6 SPG, 1.9 BPG, 47.3 FG%, 32.1 3PT%, 56.1 FT%.


Davion Warren, Hampton - Team record 11-14 (9-9 Big South).  Big South Players of the Year.  1st team All-Big South, NABC District 1st team, 4x Big South POW, 2x BCSN POW.  Key Statistics:  25 GP, 21.2 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 3.0 APG, 2.1 SPG, 45.5 FG%, 30.2 3PT%, 75.5 FT%.
