Player of the Year Candidates

The Black College Sports Network (BCSN) has named a player of the week for 14 weeks this basketball season.  We originally named players of the week in NAIA, NCAA Division II, and NCAA Division I until the CIAA and SIAC decided to suspend play this season, due to the pandemic.  We then separated our players of the week into Large Schools (NCAA Division I) and Small Schools (remaining NCAA Division II and NAIA).  After internal discussions, the BCSN decided to name a player of the year for all three levels of competition, as originally intended.  

The players of the year will be chosen by a panel of media members who follow HBCU athletics.  Fans will also get a say so in the voting.  Fans may vote via the BCSN Twitter PageThe winner of the fan poll will get an additional vote towards their player of the year vote total.  Listed below are the four candidates for each level:

NCAA DIVISION I

Dariauna Lewis, Alabama A&M - Team record 10-7 (8-6 SWAC).  1st team All-SWAC, 4x SWAC POW, 2x BCSN Player of the Week (POW).  Led conference in scoring, rebounding, and field goal percentage.  Key Statistics:  17 GP, 17.8 PPG, 13.0 RPG, 2.1 BPG, 60.4 FG%, 62.6 FT%.


Dayzsha Rogan, Jackson State - Team record 18-5 (14-1 SWAC), SWAC regular season and tournament champion.  SWAC Player of the Year, SWAC tournament MVP, 2x BCSN POW.  2nd in SWAC in scoring and 3-pointers a game.  Lead SWAC in free throws.  Key Statistics:  22 GP, 17.2 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 2.5 APG, 2.0 SPG, 42.5 FG%, 40.3 3PT%, 80.9 FT%. 


Chanin Scott, North Carolina A&T State - Team record 14-2 (9-1 MEAC).  MEAC South division champion and tournament champion.  1st team All-MEAC, 4x MEAC POW, 1x BCSN POW.  1st in MEAC AST/TO Ratio, #2 MEAC steals, #3 MEAC in FG percent, #4 MEAC scoring, #5 MEAC in rebounding, assists, FT percent.  Key Statistics:  15 GP, 13.7 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 3.5 APG, 2.3 SPG, 44.4 FG%, 79.1 FT%. 


Jayla Thornton, Howard - Team record 15-4 (10-2).  MEAC Player of the Year, 5x MEAC POW, 2x BCSN POW, 1st team All-MEAC.  #2 MEAC in FT percent, #5 in MEAC in scoring.  Key Statistics:  19 GP, 13.5 PPG, 3.1 RPG, 31.5 FG%, 32.9 3PT%, 81.4 FT%.


NCAA DIVISION II

Ay'Anna Bey, Benedict - Team record 12-3.  Key Statistics:  13 GP, 18.2 PPG, 8.6 RPG, 1.6 APG, 1.2 SPG, 51.0 FG%, 39.6 3PT%, 84.5 FT%.


Destiny Fields, West Virginia State - Team record 8-8 (8-8 MEC).  2nd Team All-MEC.  Key Statistics:  16 GP, 13.9 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 1.1 APG, 2.1 SPG, 51.7 FG%, 73.1 FT%.


Ashiala Jackson, Tuskegee - Team record 12-2, NCAA Division II Tournament At-Large. 1x BCSN POW.  Key Statistics:  14 GP, 17.4 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 1.9 SPG, 58.2 FG%, 78.4 FT%. 


Diamond Jones, Fort Valley State - Team record 6-5.  Key Statistics:  11 GP, 15.5 PPG, 2.3 RPG, 2.5 APG, 2.8 SPG, 37.8 FG%, 33.3 3PT%, 65.5 FT%.


NAIA

Asheika Alexander, Langston - Team record 8-8 (4-6 SAC), SAC tournament runner-up, NAIA Automatic Qualifier.  2nd team All-SAC, 3x BCSN POW, #1 SAC in scoring, #5 NAIA in scoring.  Key Statistics:  15 GP, 22.2 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 1.9 APG, 2.3 SPG, 1.0 BPG, 45.5 FG%, 38.5 3PT%, 65.4 FT%.


LaQuanza Glover, Edward Waters - Team record 12-5 (5-1 GCAC), GCAC regular season co-champion.  1st team All-GCAC, 2x BCSN POW, 3x GCAC POW, #2 in GCAC in scoring, #5 NAIA in offensive rebounds, #7 NAIA in total rebounds, 11 double/doubles (#11 NAIA).  Key Statistics:  17 GP, 17.2 PPG, 12.7 RPG, 3.4 APG, 2.7 SPG, 50.4 FG%, 60.2 FT%.


Tyeisha Juhan, Talladega - Team record 15-3 (5-1 GCAC), GCAC regular season co-champion.  GCAC Player of the Year, 1st team All-GCAC, 1x GCAC POW, 1x BCSN POW, #3 GCAC in scoring, #4 GCAC in steals.  Key Statistics:  18 GP, 17.0 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 2.3 APG, 2.6 SPG, 40.2 FG%, 36.2 3PT%, 71.1 FT%.


Keaynna Tolbert, Florida Memorial - Team record 10-11 (9-9 Sun).  1st team All-Sun Conference, 3x Sun POW, 2x BCSN POW.  #1 Sun in scoring, #3 NAIA in scoring, #2 Sun in FG%.  Key Statistics:  19 GP, 22.7 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 2.6 APG, 2.9 SPG, 46.6 FG%,35.5 3PT%, 61.5 FT%.
