Jones, Jackson and Zita Earn Week 4 Players Of The Week Honors

March 16, 2021 --

The top performances from Week Four of the Spring HBCU Football Season feature consecutive solid games from our offensive and defensive players of the week, and historic, game-winning, plays from the foot of our special teams player of the week.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Jackson State R-So. quarterback Jalon Jones accounted for 298 yards and four touchdowns (3 passing, 1 rushing) in the Tigers' 43-7 win over Mississippi Valley State on Sunday.

Jones completed 14-of-27 passes for a career-high 250 yards and three touchdown passes, all to junior wide receiver Daylen Baldwin (30, 38, 20 yards).  He rushed eight times for 42 yards. Jones started the Tigers first half offensive dominance with a 19-yard touchown run in the first quarter.  JSU outscored the Delta Devils 23-0 in the second quarter.

This was Jones' second-consecutive four ,touchdown performance. A week earlier against Grambling State, he threw three touchdowns and had one rushing scaore in a Tigers road victory.  On the season, Jones has a 67.2% completion percentage, eight passing touchdowns and three rushing downs with zero interceptions.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Prairie View A&M senior linebacker Storey Jackson accounted for 17 total tackles along with 2.5 tackles for loss, a pair of sacks and one interception in the Panthers' 17-10 victory over Grambling State during the State Fair Classic.

His second sack of the game was effectively the game-winner, as his takedown of Grambling State quarterback Elijah Walker at the Panthers' 21-yard line with 3:03 left resulted in a forced fumble that was recovered by the Panthers. From there, PVAMU ran out the clock to seal its third State Fair Classic win in a row.

Jackson has amassed 34 total tackles – a mark that leads the nation – along with 6.5 tackles for loss through this point in the season. The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) announced on Monday that Jackson was the Football Defensive Players of the Week for his outstanding play.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Tennessee State junior kicker Antonio Zita had himself a day, and he helped the Tigers get their first win of the spring football season with a 21-20 victory over Eastern Illinois.  Zita broke his career-long twice in the game.

Zita's broke his career long in the first quarter with a 51-yard field goal to tie the game at 3-3.  He followed that up with  the longest field goal in FCS history since 2000 when he connected on a 62-yard field goal with 4:10 to play in the fourth quarter. The game-leading kick was an Ohio Valley Conference (OVC), school and career long. The FCS record is 63 yards set in 2000.

Zita was called upon to regain the lead with 0:03 to play following a 48-yard pass play with under 40 seconds set up the game-winning 35-yard kick two plays later.
