Today Could Be The Start of the Busiest
Weekend in HBCU History

March 12, 2021

While recording the latest episode of the BCSN SportsWrap, we realized that today, Friday, March 12, 2021, could arguably be the busiest day in HBCU sports history.  While basketball fans of the larger schools look at next week as the best week for basketball, with the First 4 and the two opening round games of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament, the N.I.T. tournament and the start of the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament, for HBCU basketball fans, this is our weekend.

This is the week that HBCU basketball fans look forward to.  In normal times, the CIAA, SIAC, and GCAC champion begin their national tournament play as the MEAC and SWAC crown their champion.  Due to COVID-19, the CIAA cancelled its basketball season and the SIAC suspended championship play, the MEAC has saw one of its top teams remove itself from the tournament due to a positive, and the SWAC rearranged teams in order to play its tournament.  Despite all of these obstacles, there is an abundance of hoops action for a basketball junkie today.

In all, there are three MEAC semi-final basketball games today (men and women), four SWAC semi-final games (men and women), one NCAA Women's Division II opening round game, three NAIA Men opening round games, and two NAIA Women's opening round games involving HBCUs.  Speaking of championships, the NCAA Division I and Division II Indoor Track Championships continue today that have representation from HBCUs.

Get ready for Saturday.  Due to COVID-19, we are playing Fall sports in the Spring.  That means football will occur this weekend, as we all know how football is received in the HBCU community.  There are four football games occurring this weekend:  two SWAC, one MEAC, and one OVC game.  One SWAC and one MEAC game will be played Saturday.  Did I mention that the MEAC and SWAC will crown their Men's and Women's champion on Saturday.  There will be at least one NAIA basketball team playing Saturday, as the Stillman Men received a first round bye.

Don't forget to set your clock and Spring Forward, so you don't miss anything involving an HBCU.  Action closes on Sunday with Tennessee State in football and the postponed Jackson State vs. Mississippi Valley State game, now flexed to ESPN2.  And the nightcap, we get to see if the NCAA basketball committee sends both, one, or no HBCU to the First Four when the NCAA Men's basketball bracket is announced at 6pm EDT.

When you throw in baseball, softball, tennis, golf, bowling, women's soccer, and volleyball (another Fall sport being played in the Spring), an HBCU sports fan has so much to choose from.  So, get your phone chargers and I-pad chargers ready as you will need your phone, I-pad/tablet, smart TV, laptop/desktop, and any other device that you can find to keep up this weekend with not only your favorite HBCU, but the entire HBCU diaspora.
